FAQs
❓Who manufactures Federal tires?
- Federal Tire, founded in Taiwan in 1954, gained strong technical expertise through collaborations with Bridgestone (1960-1979) and Sumitomo Rubber Industries (1981-2000), enabling the production of its own brand, Federal Tires. With a robust global network of 182 distributors across 121 countries and extensive domestic reach through Federex Marketing Corporation, Federal delivers high-quality tires for UHP, SUV, LTR, and PCR lines, and more recently their new Xplora UTV tire. Leveraging cutting-edge technology, strict quality control, and innovative designs, Federal continues to experience significant growth, focusing on customer satisfaction, timely delivery, and improved after-sales services.
❓Why is a Segmented Mold tire better?
-
In the UTV tire industry, only very recently the use of segmented molds has become a critical factor in producing the highest-quality, most reliable steel-belted radial tires. The recreational industry always follows the leader; in this case the passenger car radial (PCR) industry, who began using segmented molds decades ago.
-
Early ATV and UTV tire manufacturers relied heavily on clamshell molds to produce their first steel-belted radials, but this method caused significant issues. Nerd alert: Steel-belted radials do not adapt well to the curing process in clamshell molds because the steel belt holds the tread rigidly in place while radial cords are unable to adjust. As the curing bladder expands inside the tire, extreme stress builds up on the carcass and belt, leading to structural weaknesses. This often caused catastrophic failures, such as tread separation and blowouts, a problem Michelin identified and resolved as early as the 1940s. For what its worth: no one builds a better tire than Michelin!
-
Segmented molds revolutionized tire production by addressing these stresses. Instead of curing the tire from the inside, segmented molds apply pressure externally. Pie-shaped segments of the mold close in on the uncured tire, eliminating internal tension and ensuring an even, stress-free cure. This technique produces stronger, more durable steel-belted radial tires—a key benefit for UTV applications where tires endure heavy loads, high speeds, and rugged terrains. Spotting the difference is simple: clamshell-molded tires have a single mold mark around the center of the tread, while segment-molded tires display multiple marks perpendicular to / crossing the tread. Today, very few UTV steel-belted radials are produced in segmented molds, but the models that are ensure better safety, durability, and performance in demanding conditions: These are Federal XPlora U/T, Broad Peak Baer X/T, Gladiator XComp ATR, and the Kenda Klever X/T.
