Premium Automotive Grade Segmented-Mold UTV and SXS Tires

Segmented Molds vs. Clamshell Molds: What's the Difference?
Simply put, segmented-mold UTV tires are manufactured using the same advanced process as automotive and light-truck tires. Rather than using a traditional two-piece "clamshell" mold that simply presses a tire together, segmented molds use multiple radially arranged pieces that compress simultaneously to form the tire. It might sound like a minor manufacturing detail, but this difference has an outsized impact on a tire’s overall performance.
For starters, segmented molds allow for greater alignment and uniformity. Each piece of the mold applies consistent pressure, translating to a well-balanced, symmetrical tire. By contrast, clamshell assemblies can allow for slight pressure variations that leave a tire slightly "off." You might not feel these minor imbalances when driving at low speeds or on bumpy trails, but if you are maxing out your UTV's top speed or cruising on pavement, they become a noticeable nuisance. Segmented molds also allow for much finer tread precision, delivering higher-quality traction through intricate siping and highly unique patterns.
Beyond external tread detail, segmented manufacturing plays a crucial role in protecting the tire's internal carcass integrity. As modern UTV riders shift toward advanced radial tires built with internal steel belts, the manufacturing process becomes critical. When a clamshell mold presses together, it exerts uneven stress on the uncured tire, which can distort its internal belts. Because a segmented mold closes evenly from all sides, it perfectly preserves the internal structure of the radial tire, ensuring the carcass remains intact, balanced, and highly durable under extreme stress.
Ultimately, clamshell mold tires aren't bad. In fact, they still dominate the UTV tire market. Think of clamshell tires like the guy who plays pickup basketball every day at your local YMCA. He can knock down a few deep threes, his pull-up jumper isn’t bad, and ultimately, he gets the job done. Segmented mold tires, on the other hand, are like the 6’7" professional athlete you see on TV. Every detail of their game is dialed in by coaches for peak performance—they can run, shoot, dunk, block, and dominate the court. Does everyone need the “professional athlete” of UTV tires? Probably not. But for those who are looking to push their off-road machines to the absolute limit, segmented mold tires are the upgrade for you. At Ride or Die Tire, we are excited to be on the forefront of UTV tire technology and proudly carry Kenda, Federal, Broad Peak, and XComp tires produced with automotive-grade quality segmented mold technology.
