FAQs
❓What ply rating are Maxxis Carnivore tires?
- Both the Carnivore ML1 and the ML9 models are designed with 8-Ply Radial construction. 8-Ply construction is widely considered a medium to heavy duty tire in the UTV and SXS market.
❓Are Maxxis Carnivore tires DOT approved?
- Yes and No. While they pass DOT regulations for use by the public, they are not "DOT Approved" in the sense most people think. For communities and states that require official "DOT Approved" tires to be used on highways, the tires in question must be stamped with the official "DOT Approved" verbiage molded in the tire sidewall.
- Most All-Terrain UTV tires, such as the Carnivore ML1 and ML9 tires, are "NHS Rated", or "Not for Highway Service". These ratings are issued by tire manufacturers and identify the primary use of the tire and demonstrate that the tire is designed primarily for off-road uses.
❓Does this mean that a tire marked "NHS" is not allowed on the highway?
- No. "NHS" Rated tires are allowed on the highway per the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) guidance Section 393.75 assuming they meet the following conditions:
-
- The use of such NHS tires does not decrease the safety of operations (see Periodic Inspection Requirements, Appendix G to subpart B).
- State and Local laws permit the use of NHS Rated tires on public roads.
❓What is the difference between the Carnivore ML1 and ML9 tire?
- While these tires share many similarities (why ruin a good thing?) there are a couple of differences to highlight. The ply construction on the ML1 tire is Nylon while the ML9 tire uses Polyester. Typically Nylon ply construction provides slightly better durability and puncture resistance while Polyester ply construction enhances ride quality and ride smoothness while also offering enhanced UV protection to promote protection against sun damage and dry rot.
- Additionally, the ML9 showcases a new tread pattern with deeper lug design, just over an inch in fact. The redesigned tread pattern also helps to provide center tread stability with overlapping and angled tread groups. Corner lug design extends over the sidewall to promote better rock and crawling traction.
❓Where is the Carnivore RT ML9 tire made?
- Regardless of the tire company, model-specific tire manufacturing can be very fluid. Changes to import/export laws, tariffs, and ever changing workforce dynamics constantly force UTV tire manufacturers to adapt in order to remain competitive in the market, both with price and quality. At this time, Maxxis manufactures the ML9 tire in Thailand. Nearly all ATV, UTV, and SXS tires on the market currently (2024) are manufactured in China, Taiwan, or Thailand.
Carnivore RT Customer Reviews
Because this is a brand new tire, we are working hard to gather new Carnivore RT product reviews. Great news is that you can help us out! If you are currently running a set of these or would like to purchase a set and let us know how you feel they perform, we'd love to hear from you at Ride or Die! See below for what we've uncovered through our research so far:
Performance and Traction
Carnivore RT's aggressive tread pattern, is designed to deliver outstanding grip in muddy and rocky conditions. Although designed for more extreme environments, this is still more of an "all-terrain" tire and should allow riders to confidently tackle a wide range of terrains.
Durability
The Carnivore RT uses an 8-ply-rated radial construction, enhancing its resilience against punctures and wear. This robust build quality ensures the tire withstands the rigors of off-road adventures, and should enhance the tire's longevity.
Weight Considerations
Weighing approximately 39.22 lbs for the 30x10.00R14 size, the Carnivore RT strikes a balance between durability and speed performance. This weight is comparable to other high-quality UTV tires, ensuring that the tire's weight does not compromise its agility or handling.
Overall Assessment
The Maxxis Carnivore RT (ML9) stands out as a top-tier UTV tire, offering fantastic traction, durability, and performance across various terrains. Its aggressive design and robust construction will make it a reliable choice for off-road enthusiasts seeking a tire that can handle demanding conditions without compromising on ride quality.
Performance Ratings:
- Handling: Preliminarily rated "EXCELLENT" for its stability and control across diverse terrains.
- Traction: "SUPERIOR" in muddy and rocky conditions, thanks to its aggressive tread design.
- Value: Unfortunately, until there are more user ratings for this tire it's hard to rate this tire on value. However, based on the performance of other Maxxis tires and the construction and tread design of the RT, this should be a great performing tire for a wide range of users.
