FAQs

❓What ply rating are Maxxis Carnivore tires?

  • Both the Carnivore ML1 and the ML9 models are designed with 8-Ply Radial construction. 8-Ply construction is widely considered a medium to heavy duty tire in the UTV and SXS market. Rugged durability, puncture resistance, and great load rating are characteristics of an 8-Ply tire, while being mindful of weight and responsiveness that can plague the heaviest duty 10-Ply UTV tire models.

❓Is the Maxxis Carnivore RT ML1 tire DOT approved?

  • Yes and No. While they pass DOT regulations for use by the public, they are not "DOT Approved" in the sense most people think. For communities and states that require official "DOT Approved" tires to be used on highways, the tires in question must be stamped with the official "DOT Approved" verbiage molded in the tire sidewall.
  • Most All-Terrain UTV tires, such as the Carnivore ML1 and ML9 tires, are "NHS Rated", or "Not for Highway Service". These ratings are issued by tire manufacturers and identify the primary use of the tire and demonstrate that the tire is designed primarily for off-road uses.

❓Does this mean that a tire marked "NHS" is not allowed on the highway?

  • No. "NHS" Rated tires are allowed on the highway per the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) guidance Section 393.75 assuming they meet the following conditions:
    1. The use of such NHS tires does not decrease the safety of operations (see Periodic Inspection Requirements, Appendix G to subpart B).
    2. State and Local laws permit the use of NHS Rated tires on public roads.

❓What is the difference between the Carnivore ML1 and ML9 tire?

  • While these tires share many similarities (why ruin a good thing?) there are a couple of differences to highlight. The ply construction on the ML1 tire is Nylon while the ML9 tire uses Polyester. Typically Nylon ply construction provides slightly better durability and puncture resistance while Polyester ply construction enhances ride quality and ride smoothness while also offering enhanced UV protection to promote protection against sun damage and dry rot.
  • Additionally, the ML1 model embraces the proven open all-terrain tread pattern that has been so successful in harsh environments. Nylon ply construction enhances durability and strength.

❓Where is the Carnivore RT ML1 tire made?

  • Regardless of the tire company, model-specific tire manufacturing can be very fluid. Changes to import/export laws, tariffs, and ever changing workforce dynamics constantly force UTV tire manufacturers to adapt in order to remain competitive in the market, both with price and quality. At this time, Maxxis manufactures the ML1 tire in Thailand. Nearly all ATV, UTV, and SXS tires on the market currently (2024) are manufactured in China, Taiwan, or Thailand.
